Chamomile is a low-growing relative of the sunflower, native to Eastern Europe and now found around the world. It is especially abundant in Hungary, Croatia, and Serbia, although chamomile grown in Egypt has an exceptionally high content of essential oils. Its name derives from the Greek chamos (ground) and melos (apple), referring to its creeping growth pattern and the apple-like scent of its fresh blossoms.

The history of Chamomile dates back to the time of the Ancient Egyptians, when it was dedicated to their gods for being a cure for high fever. It was used for incense and in beverages by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, it was known as a strewing herb to improve the atmosphere at gatherings and festivals. Chamomile was brought to North America by the European colonists around the 16th century.

Chamomile’s calmative effect can help with restlessness, and to induce a good night’s sleep. It is believed to alleviate anxiety and hyperactivity.

Chamomile may improve a pet’s digestion, including issues with gas and vomiting. It is said to be useful in treating bowel problems, calming nervous stomachs, and easing diarrhea.

As an anti-inflammatory, Chamomile may help soothe hotspots and skin disorders caused by flea bites, allergies, and bacterial or fungal infection. Additionally, its antibacterial and antiseptic properties could be useful for pet’s with infected or irritated eyes, and to help cleanse eye discharge. Chamomile also has an antiparasitic effect, making it a possible choice to help expel worms. Used externally, it may repel fleas and mosquitoes.

Avoid use with pregnant pets.
